Charlotte

Today we spent the day hanging around Charlotte, North Carolina. In the morning we went to Smelly Cat Coffee (for Kerri) so we could do some blogging. It’s in the NoDa neighborhood of Charlotte which is a really cool, artsy area.

For breakfast(10:30am) we had some fried chicken at Price’sChicken Coup. We shared a half chicken and it came with tater rounds, hush puppies, cole slaw and a roll. I don’t want to lose credibility by always saying things are the BEST we’ve ever had. But it really was. THE BEST. The inside was so juicy and the outside was so crispy, it was perfection. They don’t have seats inside so we had to eat in the car since it’s our home at the moment. But I think even if we had a home that fried chicken never would have made it too far beyond the car. We spent the rest of the afternoon going in and out of antique shops and exploring downtown.

Our last stop was The Olde Mecklenberg Brewery which is a German style brewery. We got samplers of their 4 beers, all of which were easy drinking and great for a hot day. We made some friends with a couple that moved to Charlotte from New York and they gave us a lot of tips for the rest of our trip while Larry played cornhole with their son.

Largest Chest of Drawers

On our way from Raleigh to Charlotte, North Carolina we decided to stop to see the World's Largest Chest of Drawers in High Point, North Carolina.  High Point is the "Home furnishings capitol of the world." I want to use the socks for sleeping bags on our next camping trip.

Raleigh, North Carolina

Our first food stop in Raleigh, North Carolina was The Pit for some barbecue. We split their chopped barbecue plate with fried okra and sweet potato fries on the side. It also came with hush puppies which were delicious! Larry wasn’t too crazy about the barbecue but loved the hush puppies. I thought it was really good especially if you mixed their two sauces together.

Next we went a few blocks over to the Flying Saucer to cross off another place off the 125 places to have a beer before you die. They have a huge beer selection and over 50 taps. They also have a club you can join where they record every beer you’ve tried there. When you’ve tried 200 beers you get a plate with your name and favorite quote on it stuck onto the ceiling.
We had one more barbecue stop in Raleigh but to give ourselves some time to digest, we went for a walk around the North Carolina Museum of Art. We found a cache in the woods, some blackberries and the Collapse statue among other things.

Our next stop was the Backyard BBQ Pit. Oh. My. God. There is no way I can explain how good it was so I’m not even going to try. Just please, please get yourself there at your earliest convenience. We got the ribs with macaroni and cheese and collard greens for sides. The macaroni and cheese was the best I’ve ever had - so cheesy and delicious. We also got sweet tea which Larry hated because it was too sweet because he forgot what state he was in, I think. In the car he kept saying he got diabetes from it. I love the south.

Big Boss

Our first stop in Raleigh, North Carolina was Big Boss Brewing Company. They didn’t have a tour scheduled so we just went in to their taproom to try some of their beers. It was huge and had a bunch of different rooms with ping pong tables, pool tables, etc. It was clearly put together by “bros” and evident that no woman had any say in the décor. We got two flights so that we could try all of their beers, 8 in total. None of them were anything too special but we liked their D'Icer (Dunkleweisen) and High Roller (American style IPA).
