We have never been huge
Dogfish Head fans, but since we were
doing an i95 tour, we figured we had to stop at this reputable brewery who makes almost every Top 10 Brewery list and also
holds a spot in the
125 places to have a beer before you die. We arrived at Dogfish Head Brewery early and
so we decided to look for a geocache on the brewery grounds. Once inside, we were greeted by two friendly
tour guides that talked to us while we awaited our 11am tour. We’ve done a lot of brewery tours and this
one wasn’t much different from the others. However, being one of the first
craft breweries, they talked a lot of the difficulties that the smaller craft
breweries face when competing the much larger beer companies. We loved the story of the founder, Sam Calagione and how he threw his English degree away and came to do what he really loved. During the tour we sampled 4 of the
30 available beers, none of which were too enjoyable. We have to give credit
where it is due and what Dogfish Head does is think outside of the box and brew
beers that your typical brewery doesn’t dare attempt.
Our tour guide told us that their alehouse has a bunch of
experimental beers that they test out on the public, and choose to brew
depending on their popularity. We decided to drive out to Rehoboth Beach for lunch to
give their beers another try. We split a
flight and selected 5 beers we thought sounded interesting. Again, interesting
would be the best way to describe them but not necessarily enjoyable. Don't let the picture of the delicious looking beer fool you, one of them tasted like mustard. Bottomline? We love what Dogfish Head is doing, but it’s not really for us :)
